Undeveloped pumpkins

All pumpkins start out life as one of these, a ‘proto-pumpkin’ under a female flower. All these mini-pumpkins start to develop, but if the flower has not been fertilised sufficiently, then the development will stop and the pumpkin aborts from the plant.

I saw many such pumpkins drop from my plant this year, so I did end up giving the plant a helping hand with a paintbrush, depositing pollen from a male flower onto several of the female flowers.
